Awana Sdn Bhd
is a joint venture between KHSB Equity Sdn Bhd, a member of
the Bukhary group of companies related
to Tan Sri Syed Mohktar Al Bukhary and Wirawasa Sdn Bhd, a
company owned by Ooi Poay Lum who’s previous corporate
career included 21 years with public listed IJM Corporation
Berhad
Tan Sri Syed Mohktar’s wide business interests include the
control of a number of public listed companies in the Kuala
Lumpur Stock Exchange such as Malaysian Mining Corporation
Berhad, Pernas International Berhad, IJM Corporation Berhad
etc. and is also known for many charitable and public
interest activities such as the Bukhary Foundation and the
International Islamic Arts Museum in Kuala Lumpur.
Ooi Poay Lum is a Chartered Engineer by profession who
started his career with the international French
construction conglomerate Dragages in 1976 as Site Engineer
on a deep water wharves project in Butterworth, Malaysia and
later as a Design Engineer in Bangkok on a major bridge
construction project with Italian-Thai as JV partners.
In 1980, he returned to Malaysia to join Jurutama Sdn Bhd as
Project Manager in Kedah responsible for a wide range of
construction contracts from roads, bridges, complexes and
housing to prefab schools. Jurutama was one of the pioneer
companies that was merged in 1984 resulting in the creation
of IJM Corporation Berhad for listing in the Kuala Lumpur
Stock Exchange.
Following the listing of IJM, he set up the
IJM Regional Office in Penang to start the property
development arm for the group. For the major part of his 21
year career with the IJM group, he had overseen the growth
and development of IJM’s property division which has earned
a strong reputation for good design, workmanship and
responsible property management services in a wide range of
property projects. These projects range from the very
successful Sri Pangkor and Sri York condominiums in Penang
to the very popular Riana Green condominiums in Petaling
Jaya. Other notable quality projects include the education
township of Bukit Jambul Indah in Penang which boasts other
successful apartments projects such as Lakeside and Parkview
condominiums and a quality benchmark project called Taman
Utama housing estate in Sandakan, Sabah. Whilst heading this
division, more than RM1.2 billion ringgit worth of
developments ranging from major government privatization
property based projects to condominiums, landed properties,
low cost housing, commercial and industrial projects have
been successfully completed throughout the country in
various states stretching from Kedah, Penang, Perak,
Selangor, Johore, Sarawak to Sabah.
A firm believer in the value of innovation,
organizational learning, research and development in the
strive for continuous improvements in planning, design,
quality control, technology competency and services in the
property business,
he holds a business doctorate
degree (DBA) from the University of South Australia after
completing his research thesis entitled "Market Orientation
: Fact or Fiction - An Exploratory Study of Publicly Listed
Malaysian Property Companies."
